Available positions

Upper Elementary Teacher; full time

Almaden Country School is seeking an upper elementary homeroom teacher. Core classes include language arts/literature, math, and social studies in an academically rigorous curriculum; homeroom teachers also facilitate class meetings, using the Character and Competence program. This teacher attends a week-long camping experience.ACS teachers are expected to differentiate instruction to meet a wide range of student needs and readiness levels. Key to success at Almaden Country School is an understanding and appreciation of children’s developmental stages and a deliberate focus on building relationships with students, parents and colleagues.

The successful applicant will value a cooperative learning environment in which colleagues work together for the benefit of the students. He or she will provide evidence of high personal and professional standards, communication ability and eagerness to grow as a teacher.

Requirements/Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrated success in working with 10 – 12 year olds
  • Familiarity with current upper-elementary curricula and instructional strategies, in the context of a developmental learning philosophy
  • Demonstrated success in designing and implementing differentiated instruction to meet individual student needs
  • Familiarity with best practices in instruction

Overview of Almaden Country School:
Almaden Country School is an independent, pre-K through 8th grade school located in the Almaden Valley of San Jose. The school's mission is to "discover the gifts in every child." ACS promotes the belief that children learn best when instruction is age-appropriate, highly individualized, and joyful.

We serve 425 students, with an average of 20 students per class. Our students graduate prepared for a rigorous high school experience. It is not unusual for half of the students in an ACS graduating class to be accepted into high school with academic distinction or honors placement. Approximately 20 percent of the student body receives tuition aid.

ACS strives to develop well-rounded children, with all students taking drama, foreign language, physical education, music, art, and in the middle school, many choices for elective classes. The school’s signature enrichment programs, hands-on science featuring an outdoor classroom, and a robust integrated technology program, all contribute to the emphasis on whole-child instruction at ACS.

Our parents are very committed to the school and follow the progress of their children carefully. Teachers are held to high expectations for meeting the needs of our children and families. 

We seek teaching candidates who are well versed in developmental pedagogy and differentiated teaching methods, and who are committed to providing individualized attention to our students and parents. A collaborative work style and a receptive attitude toward cooperative efforts are required in our small school. All positions involve additional required duties, such as field trip supervision (including overnights for upper elementary and middle school grades).

Physical Education Instructor/Athletic Director; grades 4–8; full time

Almaden Country School is seeking a Physical Education teacher, experienced in teaching developmental PE to students in grades 4 - 8. PE at ACS emphasizes skill development; coordination; conditioning; team-building; and healthy life-style choices. Teacher will be able to transition from a fully developmental program in the elementary grades to a middle school program, balancing skill development with sports fundamentals.

The Athletic Director will promote the 5th – 8th after-school athletics program and actively recruit students to participate. ACS supports teams in volleyball, flag football, basketball, and track and field. Our after-school sports program maintains our developmental philosophy within the more competitive nature of our athletic league.  Teaching will comprise 80% of the contract, with the remaining 20% dedicated to Athletic Director responsibilities.

Requirements/Responsibilities:
    Minimum of 3 years experience teaching developmental PE
    Experience in designing curriculum that addresses individual student needs
    Philosophical emphasis on motor skill development and sportsmanship
    Ability to teach a wide range of sports to middle school students, including track and field, lacrosse, baseball, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, and basketball
    Experience in organizing and supporting an after-school sports program
    Strong organizational skills and demonstrable communication skills to meet the demands of the Athletic Director position
    Team attitude (ex. Willingness to participate in ordering, organizing, and maintaining equipment and materials with other P.E. teachers)
    Desire to host informational events to build interest and appreciation for the after-school sports program
    Desire to collaborate with colleagues and administrators
    Evidence of ongoing professional development
    Basic technology skills
    Writing skills to present professionally to parents, colleagues, and league representatives; and appreciation for prompt responsiveness to parent and school questions and needs
    Willingness to carry out other duties and responsibilities, as required of all faculty

Preferred Qualifications:
    PE Single subject teaching credential
    Experience with curriculum mapping
    Willingness to coach after-school sports
