Science instruction at Almaden Country School reflects our belief that children learn science best by doing science.
Science at ACS is taught by three specialists, who serve as co-investigators, working side-by-side as students lead experiments and investigations.
In the elementary grades, our goal is to get children excited about science — they wonder, become more curious, explore and imagine, ask questions and find out that answers lead to more questions!
In the elementary grades, students learn to think like scientists by:
• Planning and conducting investigations in our dedicated science lab
• Growing, digging, exploring and discovering in our organic garden
• Crawling into a classroom-size Star Lab to learn about astronomy through observing and mapping the “real” night-time sky.
By applying scientific principles and concepts starting with hands-on explorations, ACS elementary students gain a deep conceptual framework that makes the theory, rigor, and terminology of science relevant and meaningful. And best of all, they are fascinated by scientific investigation and enthusiastic to learn more about this critical subject!
Science exploration in our elementary school provides a strong foundation for our middle school science program, where students engage in rigorous lab-based studies in our dedicated science classroom and lab.
While our focus is on the students’ journeys through inquiry-based science, we are proud that as a result of exceptional preparation at ACS, many of our graduates are accepted each year into advanced high school science classes and go on to pursue science majors in college.
